Raising donations for Sveta Khydyrova is over

On 18 April 2008, the Union of the Charitable Organisations of Russia (UCOR) launched a donation raising campaign for Sveta Khydyrova, a girl from the Azeri capital city of Baku, who has the left kidney's nephroblastoma.

Russian doctors in Moscow are doing their utmost to save the little Azeri girl. There is hope for saving her. Sveta is to undergo six chemotherapy courses and radiation therapy, after which she is to be operated to on to have part of the kidney removed.

The problem was Sveta's parents lacked money to pay for her treatment and the fund-raising was very slow. We had been unable to raise the sum of money needed for the treatment before the global financial crisis struck. Fortunately, the crisis has not affected such important a sphere, as mercy, kindness and compassion, and, when we began to lose hope for help, help was offered to Sveta suddenly.

A child's life and human compassion are more valuable than all the riches in the world. Through to kindness, our souls sometimes gain more than our wallets give.

Today, we are glad to inform you that the money needed for Sveta's course of treatment have been raised.

Sveta's parents and the staff of the Billion in Small Change first national charitable programme are thankful to everyone who responded to their call for help.

Sveta Khydyrova

Sveta Khydyrova, six years old

Address: city of Baku, Republic of Azerbaijan
Diagnose: nephroblastoma of the left kidney
Necessary: six courses of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery including resection of part of the kidney
Sum required: 1,261,770 rubles for the treatment

Rubles: 1 261 770.00

Dollars: 30 279.04

Euro: 39 190.15

Still lacking: 0 rubles

Six-year-old Sveta is the junior daughter of the large Khydyrov family. She has two sisters - the elder one is 11 and the middle one eight, with Sveta's middle sister being no full sister of hers. The Khydyrovs adopted her, having displayed the compassion and love for children common to all kind people as well as the desire to share their family happiness with someone who was deprived of it.

However, the tightly knit family is itself in need of assistance and compassion: the menace of death is facing Sveta.

Suddenly, the girl's belly started increasing and deforming. Local doctors diagnosed nephroblastoma - left kidney cancer simply put.

Unfortunately, doctors in Baku, where the Khydyrovs reside, cannot cure the disease yet. Therefore, Sveta's father sold his car, borrowed some money from relatives and sent the girl and her mother to Moscow to seek treatment.

In spite of the disease's progress, Russian doctors started treating the little girl. Sveta completed her pre-surgery combined chemotherapy course in February. The drugs used as part of the course caused blood toxicity, and special treatment was prescribed to Sveta.

However, five days later, it had to be suspended, because a kid in an adjacent ward caught chickenpox. The children's unit was quarantined, and Sveta and her mother had to move out to a rented flat.

Sveta came back to the clinic on 18 March. She is to remain there for as long as six months. A surgery to remove her left kidney was scheduled, as were six post-surgery combined and intensive chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Doctors are doing their best to save the child, and the hope for success remains. According to doctors, nephroblastoma is among the most widespread tumours; hence, oncologists are well versed in dealing with it. Following chemotherapy, part of the kidney is removed, with the rest of the kidney restoring its capability. 50 to 80% of ill children recover even if both kidneys are affected.

However, recovering from one disease, one may contract another, and the risk is high enough. Sveta is to take a radiation therapy course soon, with radiation therapy causing numerous side effects affecting the fragile health of children. In addition to medicines for basic treatment, Sveta needs drugs for accompanying therapy.

However, the Khydyrovs have got no money for either basic or accompanying therapies. Sveta's mother has got no job because she has to provide continuous care to her daughter. The girl's father has lost his job. The two have to support the family of five and pay for Sveta's treatment whose cost is estimated at 1,261,770 rubles - a sum impossible for the Khydyrovs who does not have anybody to rely on.

Sveta does not know about this, of course. At night, when the children's unit goes to bed, she dreams about recovering soon and getting back home to the warm tender sea and her kinsfolk…

Whether the girl's dreams come true and she fights off cancer or not now depends not only on the skills of doctors but on merciful compassionate people as well.

Abstract from the letter by Sveta Khydyrova’s parents to UCOR:

“Please, help us to pay for the treatment of our child. We came to Moscow from Azerbaijan to have her treated because we were unable to get the relevant medical assistance in Baku. We have two more children – the elder daughter of 11 and the adopted middle daughter of eight”.
